Professor Xabier Irigoien
Professor of Marine Science, Red Sea Research Center at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST)
Dr. Xabier Irigoien was Director of the Red Sea Research Center at King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) from 2011-2016. He was awarded a Phd in Oceanography by the University of Bordeaux in 1994. Hi career has included successively appointments at “Instituto de Ciencias del Mar” (CSIC, Barcelona), “Plymouth Marine Laboratory” (NERC, Plymouth) and “Southampton Oceanography Center” (NERC, Southampton), before joining AZTI, Spain in 2002. He has participated in several EU funded projects (JEEP, MATURE, MARE, TASC, DEVOTES) and led projects funded by NERC (UK) and MCYT (Spain).
Professor Irigoien’s research is focused on the understanding of the functioning of pelagic marine ecosystems. He has interests in trophic control of recruiting mechanisms and in factors controlling biodiversity.
